Kos 6
Tube + Sphere:
Balance Through the Sphere
For this Shabbat Kos, the research centers on finding equilibrium for a brass tube cut at a 135-degree angle. The object presents itself as an open, almost precarious form, calling for support to exist as a vessel.
This piece is the result of a mechanical study where design does not merely serve aesthetics: it becomes a structural necessity.
The Concept
The challenge lay in the weight and dynamics of the liquid. To transform this tilted tube into a functional glass-while adhering to the self-imposed rules of my "Balance" series-the architectural solution was the integration of a sphere at the base.
Counterbalancing the Tilt: The sphere acts as a pivot, compensating for the angle of inclination to stabilize the whole.
Structural Discretion: Much like a shoe heel, this subtle volume is almost invisible at first glance, yet it is the guarantor of the object’s verticality and poise.
Aesthetics
A dialogue between the straight line of the tube and the perfect curve of the sphere, offering a singular grip for the Kiddush ritual.
"I sought a way to let the object stand with grace despite its apparent fragility. Here, the sphere cradles the base, offering an unexpected point of balance."
