At the core of the Kiddush cup I designed lies my interpretation of Friday night dinners. I see Shabbat as a social celebration, which, each week, disconnects us from the daily routine and allows us to encounter others. Around the table, different worlds collide and connect. In my view, this meeting is dynamic, eventful, and changes from one Shabbat to the next.
As a metaphor for the encounter between different worlds, I chose planetary systems as inspiration. From this, I decided to work with circular-profile links, glass cups, and the number three, which is rich with cultural symbolism and represents physical and mathematical stability.
Throughout the process, I created a large number of sketches, each based on triangular connections between the links. With the help of a computer scientist and a mathematician, I attempted to develop an algorithm to guide me in creating a stable model with multiple cups.
In the final stage of the process, I narrowed down the possibilities to retain only the minimum number of necessary links, so that each link had a unique role in the stability of the cups. The Kiddush cup has three possible positions, marked by different colors at the points of contact with the table
